A round-table conference on ‘BC Reservations – Government Policy – Social Implications’ termed the petitions filed in the Supreme Court challenging the Telangana government’s decision to enhance reservations for Backward Classes (BCs) in local body elections as ‘politically motivated attempts to derail social justice’. They asserted that the Apex court’s decision to uphold the government’s move would reaffirm the constitutional validity of the State government’s decision.
The discussion, organised by the Samajika Telangana Intellectual Forum at the Somajiguda Press Club on Monday, was attended by Professor Thirumalay, Professor Muralikrishna, Professor Sammayya, Justice Chandrakumar, and Mr. Kumaraswamy.
While acknowledging that challenging the GO in the High Court or Supreme Court is a constitutional right, Mr. Kumaraswamy maintained that the intent behind such petitions was purely political. He urged political parties and civil society to act collectively to safeguard the rights of communities from Backward Classes. Mr. Kumaraswamy cautioned against sacrificing BC reservations for political opportunism.
