Auto sales September 2025: Tata Motors’ sales reached second place, Maruti’s domestic sales decreased year-on-year

September 2025 was a bit of a mixed bag in terms of new car sales as the month saw some notable festivals and major policy announcements. The Shraddha period, which usually causes a decline in sales, was followed by the auspicious Navratri, while the Indian government implemented revised GST rates on cars across all categories, leading to carmakers announcing reduction in vehicle prices from September 22.

Maruti Suzuki continued to be the leader in domestic vehicle sales, but wholesale sales in the domestic market were much lower compared to September last year. Sales of domestic passenger vehicles stood at 1,32,820 vehicles, which is less than 1,44,962 vehicles in September 2024. The carmaker is facing continued low demand in the entry-level hatchback segment and a significant decline in sales of the utility vehicle range.

Alto and S-Presso sales stood at only 7,208 units compared to 10,363 units last year, although sales of its larger compact hatchbacks and sedans increased to 66,882 units from 60,480 units last month. Sales of utility vehicles declined to 48,695 units from 61,549 units, while sales of eco vans declined from 11,908 units in September 2024 to 10,035 units last month. Ciaz reported zero sales for another month.

Meanwhile, sales to other OEMs stood at 11,750 units, while exports increased to 42,204 units in September 2025 from 27,728 units last year. Overall, the carmaker registered a marginal growth with 1,89,665 units as compared to 1,84,727 units in the same month last year.

The race for the second place in 2025 seems to be intensifying, because in September Tata Motors has submitted a claim for this place. The domestic carmaker has recorded sales of 59,667 units in the domestic market – a growth of 45% year-on-year. Meanwhile, exports increased by almost 400% to 1,240 units from 250 units last year.

Total passenger vehicles sales stood at 60,907 units – a growth of 47% year-on-year. Sales of electric vehicles stood at Rs 9,191/- which is an increase of 96%, and a new record for the brand. Sales of CNG vehicles also reached a new all-time high at 17,800 units.

The Nexon alone recorded the best ever sales performance in a month for the brand, with over 22,500 units sold. The company said that this was the best performance not only for the Nexon brand but also for any Tata passenger vehicle till date. The company also reported a two-fold increase in bookings following the GST 2.0 pricing changes, indicating even better performance in the coming months.

Fellow domestic SUV maker Mahindra took the third position in the month with domestic sales of 56,233 units – up 10% compared to September 2025. Meanwhile, total passenger vehicle sales stood at 58,714 vehicles.

The company has also reported a surge in demand during the nine days of Navratri, with a 60% increase in customer retail sales compared to Navratri in 2024. The company has also reported disruptions in dealer shipments, citing a shortage of vehicle trailers to ship models to dealerships across the country.

Year-to-date, Mahindra reported passenger vehicle sales of 2,97,570 units – a growth of 14% year-on-year.

Hyundai stood fourth behind Mahindra and Tata with domestic sales of 51,547 units in September. Sales in the domestic market remained relatively stable compared to September 2024, when the carmaker had reported sales of 51,101 units. However, exports increased from 13,100 units to 18,800 units.

Creta recorded its best sales month ever with sales of 18,861 units, while the demand for the Venue, which it will replace, is also seeing a rebound in the coming months. Sales of this sub-compact SUV stood at 11,484 units, which is the highest in the last 20 months. The trend towards SUVs was also evident in the demand pattern, with Hyundai reporting that SUVs accounted for more than 72% of cars sold.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor recorded domestic sales of 27,089 units in September 2025, up from 23,802 units in the same month last year. Exports stood at 4,002 units compared to 3,045 units last year. Overall, Toyota recorded sales of 31,091 units, which is 16% higher than the same period last year.

Talking about the financial year, Toyota recorded sales of 1,84,959 units in the six months from April to September 2025, which is more than 1,62,623 units in the same period last year.

Kia reported sales of 22,700 units in September 2025 – an increase of almost 16% compared to August, although sales declined year-on-year. Sales in September 2024 stood at 23,523 units. During this period, exports stood at 2,606 units.

Kia also reported a change in customer sentiment in the month with GST 2.0 reforms and the festive season leading to customer inflow and increased demand for its cars.

On a year-on-year basis, Kia is set to improve its sales performance over the last year with sales of 2,06,582 units by the end of September 2025. The carmaker had sold 1,92,690 units in the same period last year.

Honda Cars India has registered a decline in passenger vehicle sales in September 2025 compared to the same month last year. Total sales stood at 8,096 units, which is less than last year’s 10,911 units. Sales in the domestic market remained relatively stable – 5,303 units compared to 5,675 units last year, although exports declined to 2,793 units from 5,236 units.

However, the carmaker has expressed a positive outlook for the upcoming months as the ongoing festive season and GST 2.0 reforms are leading to an increase in customer footfall at dealerships across the country.

Skoda is also projecting strong sales growth in 2025 on the back of demand for its sub-compact SUV, Kylak. The carmaker reported 101% year-on-year growth in sales with 6,636 units sold in September 2025. Meanwhile, sales in the quarter ended September stood at 17,161 units, which is 110% more than the same period last year.

The brand said that so far 53,355 units have been sold in this calendar year. Of these, more than 34,500 units of Kylak were sold.

Nissan

Nissan recorded total sales of 10,500 units in the month of September, which is an increase of 9.3% compared to the same period last year. This growth was mainly due to the brand’s performance in export markets, where 8,872 units out of 10,500 units were shipped to markets outside India. Sales in the domestic market stood at 1,652 units.
