A man was arrested by the Khairatabad police on Wednesday afternoon (November 5) for illegally transporting and storing Public Distribution System (PDS) rice weighing about 1,000 kilograms during a special drive conducted by the DCP Central Zone team.
The accused, identified as Md. Azar, 24, a resident of BJR Nagar, Khairatabad, was caught while transporting the rice on a two-wheeler (TS 09 FV 3081). Police said he had procured the rice from PDS beneficiaries and was moving it to the house of his associate, Abdul Rahman, also of BJR Nagar.
When Azar arrived at Rahman’s residence and began shifting the rice sacks into the premises, the Central Zone team, acting on credible information, intercepted and apprehended him. A search of the house led to the seizure of 27 plastic bags containing nearly 10 quintals of PDS rice. Police said the seized rice was being diverted for illegal sale in the open market. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway to trace others involved in the racket.
The DCP Central Zone reiterated that strict action would continue against those misusing essential commodities meant for the poor and urged the public to report such activities immediately.
