The long-awaited Tata Harrier and Safari petrol versions are finally closer to their market launch. Both SUVs will go on sale on 9th December, 2025. Powering them will be Tata’s all-new 1.5L TGDi (turbocharged, direct injection) petrol engine, making its debut on these flagship models.
Tata’s 1.5L TGDi Petrol Engine Explained
First showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, this motor delivers a maximum power of 170PS at 5,000rpm and 280Nm of torque between 2,000rpm – 3,500rpm. Tata’s all-new 1.5L turbo petrol engine complies with BS6 Phase II emission standards and is capable running on E20 ethanol blended petrol.
Constructed from lightweight aluminium, the new TGDi engine is claimed to offer improved refinement and fuel efficiency. It has been benefited from advanced technologies such as a water-cooled variable geometry turbocharger, variable valve timing and an integrated exhaust manifold. Transmission choices will include both manual and automatic gearbox options.
Will Also Power the Sierra
The upcoming Tata Sierra will also use the new 1.5L turbo petrol engine for its higher variants, while the lower trims will get the 1.5L naturally aspirated petrol engine. This dual powertrain strategy will also allow the carmaker achieve competitive starting price point for the Sierra.
The petrol variants of the SUV are expected to cost around Rs 11 lakh for the base variant to nearly Rs 20 lakh for the top-end trim. The Sierra lineup will also be offered with a 1.5L diesel engine, possibly in a higher state of tune. The Tata Sierra EV will arrive in early 2026, sharing its powertrains with the Harrier EV.
Price Expectations
The Tata Harrier and Safari petrol are expected to be more affordable than their diesel counterparts. Currently, the Harrier diesel lineup is priced between Rs 14 lakh – Rs 25.25 lakh and the Safari diesel is available within the price range of Rs 14.66 lakh – Rs 25.96 lakh. All mentioned prices are ex-showroom.
