Congress-backed candidates continued their winning streak in the third and final phase of Gram Panchayat elections for the posts of Sarpanch and ward members.
Polling was by and large peaceful on Wednesday barring stray incidents of clashes between ruling Congress and BRS cadre in some districts.
Congress-backed candidates won as many as 6,476 Sarpanch posts followed by BRS supported nominees winning 3,347 posts. BJP-backed candidates clinched 651 Sarpanch posts with Independents and others winning 1,555. The counting of votes will continue late in the night.
The State Election Commission (TGSEC) notified a total of 12,728 Sarpanch posts and 1,12,242 Ward Member posts. The elections were held in three phases on December 11, 14 and 17. The elections witnessed as many as 1204 sarpanch and 25,551 ward members getting elected unanimously.
The SEC said that 85.77% polling was recorded in the third and final phase, with as many as 43.37 lakh voters exercising their franchise in 31 districts out of the total electorate of 50.56 lakh voters. Yadadri Bhuvanagiri district recorded a high of 92.56% polling followed by Medak 90.68 and Suryapet district recording 89.25% turnout.
