The Lok Sabha privileges committee on Friday adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of three Congress MPs — K Jayakumar, Abdul Khaleque and Vijay Vasanth — after they “expressed regret unconditionally for their behaviour”, said sources.
The Privileges Committee headed by BJP’s Sunil Kumar Singh adopted the resolution during Friday’s meeting. The resolution would be given to Lok Sabha Speaker About Birla on Monday. The Lok Sabha secretariat is expected to announce the revocation in its bulletin next week, the sources added.
The three of them were summoned before the panel on Friday to record their statement in connection with “creating grave disorder in the House” during the Winter Session. The MPs expressed regret for their behaviour in the House before the panel.
The Winter Session of Parliament witnessed a record number of suspensions — 100 in the Lok Sabha and 46 in the Rajya Sabha — as the Opposition MPs staged protests by bringing placards to the House, seeking a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and a discussion over the December 13 security breach in the Lok Sabha. While the suspension of other Lok Sabha MPs was for the Winter Session, Jayakumar, Khaleque and Vijayakumar, who had reached the presiding officer’s chair during their protest, were suspended from the Lok Sabha and the matter was referred to the privileges committee.
The suspension of 11 Rajya Sabha MPs who were referred to its privilege committee is still continuing. The last meeting of the committee, held earlier this week, could not take up the matter as there was no quorum in the meeting.
In August, the Lok Sabha Privileges Committee had unanimously adopted a resolution to revoke the suspension of Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury. Chowdhury was suspended for his remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a speech in Parliament in the Monsoon session. Chowdhury also had expressed his regrets for the remarks.
