Buoyed by the positive response for new Hyryder and Innova Hycross, Toyota is now ready to launch multiple new SUVs including the new-gen Fortuner and the Fronx-based Sub-4 meter SUV. In total, the company is planning to introduce 3 new 7-seater SUVs which will include a new SUV based on the Hycross platform. The first model will be the 7-seater version of the Urban Cruiser Hyryder, which will go on sale in our market in 2025.
Similar to the 7-seater Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Suzuki is also preparing to launch the 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara SUV in 2025. The 3-row Hyryder will challenge the likes of the Hyundai Alcazar, Tata Safari, MG Hector Plus and the Mahindra XUV700. The new 3-row SUV will be manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s new production facility in Haryana, which will be operational in 2025.
The 7-seater Toyota Hyryder will be built and supplied by Maruti Suzuki to Toyota. For people not in the know, both Grand Vitara and Hyryder are built and supplied by Toyota to Maruti Suzuki. These models are produced at Toyota’s Chennai based production facility. The SUVs are based on Suzuki’s Global C-platform that also underpins the Maruti Suzuki Brezza.
The new 3-row Hyryder is likely to be offered with the same set of engines that powers the existing 5-seater model. The SUV will receive a strong hybrid powertrain comprising of a Toyota-sourced 1.5-litre 3-cylinder naturally-aspirated petrol engine running on the Atkinson’s cycle and an electric motor that is rated at 78bhp-141Nm. The powertrain is coupled to an eCVT automatic gearbox, and the maximum usable power stands at 114bhp.
The other engine option is a mild-hybrid unit that comprises of a 102bhp, 1.5L K15C NA petrol engine paired to an electric motor. Transmission choices include a 5-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The SUV will be offered in both front-wheel and all-wheel-drive configurations. We expect that these two powertrains could prove to be underpowered for a 3-row SUV. Toyota could also use the de-tuned version of the 2.0L strong hybrid powertrain that powers the Innova Hycross.
