Michigan landlord Mohamad Hussein of Indian origin agreed to pay $185,000 in damages and a civil penalty to the Justice Department over a Fair Housing Act (FHA) lawsuit.
The lawsuit addressed his sexual harassment of female tenants and prospective renters in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.
The judge emphasized that tenants should not endure sexual harassment for housing, and U.S. The lawsuit filed detailed allegations of Hussein making unwelcome advances and offering housing benefits in exchange for sex acts.
The Justice Department’s Sexual Harassment in Housing Initiative aims to combat and raise awareness about such misconduct, having filed 39 lawsuits and recovered over $12 million since its inception in 2017.
The FHA, enforced by the Civil Rights Division and U.S. Attorneys’ Offices, prohibits housing discrimination based on various factors, including sex.
