Galaxy S23 FE creeping towards launch as it picks up new certification

Fans of Samsung’s Fan Edition Galaxy S smartphones (no pun intended) have been waiting a long time for the next device in the lineup. Samsung decided not to launch a Galaxy S22 FE for reasons the company never made clear (though the delay in the Galaxy S21 FE’s release might have had something to do with it), but it wants to get back on track this year with the Galaxy S23 FE.

The Galaxy S23 FE has been rearing its head more frequently these last couple of weeks, and this week the device has picked up a new certification and is one step closer to an official launch. This particular certification comes from Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), which lists the phone’s model number (SM-S711B/DS) and the connectivity features (5G, NFC, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth) it will have on-board.

The certification doesn’t offer any othe details on the phone, but leaks and previous appearances online have given us a pretty good idea of what to expect. The S23 FE will have specs similar to the Galaxy S23, but it will also share some similarities with the Galaxy S22, such as an Exynos 2200 chip in most markets (possibly with faster performance than an S22) and the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in some countries.

Other features should include a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED display, 8GB of RAM and 128GB and 256GB storage options, a 50MP primary camera at the back flanked by a 12MP ultra-wide camera and an 8MP 3x zoom camera, a 10MP selfie camera, and a 4,500 mAh battery that charges at a maximum of 25W.

Like its predecessors, the S23 FE is expected to have an IP67-certified water and dust-resistant design. On the software front, you will get last year’s Android 13 with One UI 5.1 slapped on top and a guarantee of four major Android OS upgrades.

The Galaxy S233 FE’s color options will include graphite, mint, purple/lilac, and white, though you can expect availability of those colors to vary by country. It’s not clear when consumers will be able to get their hands on the phone; some might have to wait until 2024 as there’s a possibility that the initial launch will only target select markets.
