In the AP Reorganization Act of 2013, the Union government allocated additional funds to the three Uttaraandhra districts and four Rayalaseema districts to address their backwardness. It is noteworthy that Prakasam district has now been included in the list of backward districts, which has been a long-awaited dream since the state’s bifurcation.

This inclusion means that Prakasam district will now receive special funds to aid its development.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced this inclusion while presenting the budget in Parliament.
She confirmed that along with the seven previously identified backward districts of Andhra Pradesh, Prakasam has also been recognized as a backward district. This inclusion is attributed to the efforts of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who convinced the Finance Minister of the district’s needs.

Historically, Prakasam district, which is more backward than many other districts, was not initially included in the list of backward districts. The then TDP representatives of Prakasam had brought this issue to the attention of the CM. Although a recommendation was made to the Centre at that time, it was not approved, and the subsequent YSRCP government did not pursue it further.
In the recent budget presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, significant priority was given to infrastructure sectors, agriculture, employment generation, industries, and other key areas, with a total budget of Rs. 38 lakh crore. Huge funds have been allocated for railways, highways, ports, drinking water, electricity, rural development, and the employment guarantee scheme.

As a result of this budget, Prakasam district will receive sector-wise funds, and additional special funds by being included in the list of backward areas. These funds will support the development of specially backward areas and will be in addition to the funds allocated for ongoing projects like the National Highways, Nadikudi-Srikalahasti Railway Project, and other partnership schemes currently under construction in the district. This comprehensive funding will aid in addressing the developmental needs of Prakasam and other backward districts.
