Aamir Khan, the actor behind the only 2000-crore-grossing Indian film Dangal, is known for his exceptional film choices and commitment to high-quality cinema.

Despite some doubts about Dangal’s business in China, it remains the highest-grossing Indian film of all time. Now according to some reports in the media, Aamir has decided to remake Vijay Sethupathi’s blockbuster hit Maharaja, planning to play the lead role.

However, remaking a film in this era might not be the best decision, especially when South Indian films have a massive reach among North Indian audiences. Maharaja has been a huge success in theaters and on OTT platforms, making its mark widely.

Aamir Khan picked Maharaja after its mass appreciation. However, Bollywood remakes of South Indian films often get mixed responses at the box office. Aamir plans to make changes to the story in the Bollywood template, adding his unique style to attract a wider audience at a pan-India level.

Yet, the challenge remains to adapt the film to a broader mindset, a hurdle that many remakes fail to clear. Bollywood has a history of inconsistent results with remakes. While some, like Ghajini and Kabir Singh, were blockbusters, others like Jersey, Bachchan Pandey, Vikram Vedha, and Sarfira flopped miserably.

Aamir’s last release, Laal Singh Chaddha, an adaptation of Forrest Gump, failed due to cultural and linguistic differences, turning into an epic disaster. Audiences today increasingly favor original content, posing another risk. This remake might not even get a chance from the audience in the first place.

Many believe Aamir, who has struggled with no major success in the last eight years, is making a blunder by remaking a widely-watched film like Maharaja. This decision might only worsen his current standing, as audiences look for fresh and original content.
