Altroz Racer EV & Future Models

Tata Motors introduced its Racer performance brand with the Altroz Racer in June 2024. The model, which has been positioned against the Hyundai i20 N Line, comes with a more powerful 1.2L turbo-petrol engine and a few cosmetic and feature upgrades. The indigenous automaker is now planning to bring in more models with different powertrains under its Racer performance brand, including EVs.

Speaking to a media publication, Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd., revealed that the Altroz EV is already under development, so there is a possibility of its “electric hot hatch version” as well. Tata’s Racer brand serves a niche segment, and after considering the market’s demand, it might introduce more models under its performance brand. This hints that Tata Motors aims to target Hyundai India’s N Line performance division with the expansion of its Racer brand.

Altroz Racer EV & Future Models

As we are all aware, Tata Motors and Jayem Automotives announced the JTSV (Jayem Tata Special Vehicles) performance car venture back in 2017. Under this joint venture, the company introduced the Tiago JTP and Tigor JTP in 2018and the Nexon JTP was also reported to be under development. However, the first two JTP models failed to attract buyers, and their declining sales pushed the carmaker to take them off the market with the implementation of the BS6 emission standards in 2020.

Talking about the Tata Altroz EV, the electric hatchback launch has been confirmed for 2025. The model was first showcased in its concept form at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, followed by its India debut in 2020 at the Auto Expo. The Altroz EV will share its platform with the Punch.ev and might come with battery packs (25kWh – 35kWh) and an electric motor similar to its electric sibling. A few EV-specific changes will be made to the hatchback.
