Bajrang Punia gives update on Vinesh Phogat’s return to India | Paris Olympics 2024 News

NEW DELHI: Bajrang Punia provided an update regarding Vinesh Phogat‘s delayed return to India. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) postponed their decision on Vinesh’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics for the third time on Tuesday.
Bajrang took to social media platforms to post a poster that contained information about Vinesh’s homecoming and the festivities organized to honor her achievements. The celebrations are set to take place on Saturday, August 17, along the route she will be taking upon her return.

Vinesh was disqualified on the morning of the Paris Olympics final for exceeding the 50kg weight limit, as she was found to be 100 grams over during the weigh-in.

Following her disqualification, Phogat requested the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on August 7 to award her the silver medal.
CAS had previously extended the deadline to August 13. Vinesh had advanced to the gold medal match after defeating Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals.
The 29-year-old was poised to compete against Sarah Ann Hildebrandt of the United States for the gold medal but was disqualified due to exceeding the weight limit. The day after her disqualification, Vinesh announced her decision to retire from wrestling.
Following Vinesh’s failure to meet the weight limit, members and officials of the Indian Olympic Association faced increased scrutiny.
IOA President PT Usha clarified on Sunday that the responsibility for weight management of athletes in sports like wrestling, weightlifting, boxing, and judo lies with each athlete and their coach, not with the IOA-appointed Chief Medical Officer Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team.
Usha stated that each Indian athlete in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in such sports had their own support team, which had been working with the athletes for many years, according to a statement from IOA.
