Kannada star hero Rishab Shetty recently garnered national attention after winning a National Award for his work in Kantara. However, his candid opinions about Bollywood and its portrayal of India in films have stirred up a heated debate.
In a recent interview, the Kannada actor expressed that Bollywood often shows India in a negative light.

According to him, many Bollywood films focus more on international accolades, such as invitations to global events and red carpets, rather than portraying a genuine picture of India.
Rishab Shetty emphasized that for him, his pride lies in his nation, his state, and his language, which he chooses to represent positively on the global stage.

While his comments earned applause from fans of South Indian cinema, Bollywood enthusiasts were extremely furious. They criticized Shetty for making such remarks while Kantara itself, according to them, was filled with scenes of violence, vulgarity, and cruelty.
Social media quickly became a battleground, with users expressing their views on the matter.

One user commented on Twitter/X, “Kantara itself objectified women in so many ways, could never get the fuss about it.” Another added, “Insulting the Hindi film industry is in fashion nowadays.”
Some users defended Bollywood, pointing out its contributions to cinema with films centered around women, patriotism, and historical narratives.
Some reactions became more personal, as one post criticized Shetty, saying, “Success is temporary, but pinching female waist & shitting on Bollywood is permanent.” Another user pointed out the bias against Bollywood, stating, “Such a jealous soul… There are good & bad films in every industry… but their target will always be Bollywood.”
Another person went so far as to compare it to the Kannada industry, saying, “At least Bollywood doesn’t have a murderer like Darshan from the Kannada industry who kills his own fans.”
A well-known Twitter user also weighed in, saying, “Degrading our movies is fine! Ridiculing our big stars is fine! Insulting our industry time & again is fine! But when someone from the Hindi belt (Arshad Warsi) comments about one of their ‘film characters’ (Prabhas in Kalki), that’s where they draw the line.”
Rishab Shetty’s recent comments might not have been needed right now. His next movie, Kantara 2, will need support from the Hindi film industry and Bollywood fans to do well.
If he keeps making remarks that cause divisions between fans and film industries, it could hurt his movie’s chances. It would be better for him to focus on bringing people together, rather than saying things that might push them apart.
