Work has been slow but steady.
The windows are back on the car, as are the tail lights.
We’ve used the fresh moulding and the soft sealant strips that go above and below the windscreen. Thanks to the elaborate part diagrams, I’ve ordered everything I deemed necessary to fix the glass. I surprised my mechanic because he didn’t expect the strips that go under the glass.
He found that the front glass didn’t sit quite right (we hadn’t taken it off all this time) so he got that removed and installed again with appropriate bonding solution. This was done by professionals and cost me ₹2,800. Quite expensive if you ask me. It took an hour to do.
The side sills of the car are fixed. It took quite some time to source the clips required to affix them to the car. I placed an order for them from Korea but cancelled after my mechanic found a 100pc pack locally (still cheaper than buying the required 24pcs from abroad)
The AC recirculation flap has been partly damaged by rodents.
This happened before I purchased the car (I can say this with confidence because the Sonata has been under the watchful eye of 4 cats since I drove it into the factory). Hyundai doesn’t have a separate part number for this assembly so my mechanic will attempt some fix by himself. It’s not a big problem – there’s no pressure, no heat, and no fluids involved, so anything will do basically.
There was a similar-sized hole in the old air filter which has since been replaced.
The seats are back from re-upholstering.
I chose to play it safe and went with a shade close to the original seats.
Sorry for the bad picture, but the seats are covered until they go back in the car.
The headlining that is sagging is not re-upholstered by the shop that did the seats. They gave me a reference who quoted ₹7k for just the roof lining. I think it’s exorbitant considering I paid ₹15k for all seats + 4 door cards, so I’ve decided to wash the old one and have it bonded again (it was just the glue that had given up, causing the sag.) There are zero tears in the fabric so it’s not a problem to re-use at all.
A final Korean spare order is placed.
This is the last of the import orders and contains 33 parts, big and small. Owing to the rare nature of the Sonata as well as its age, I will know only at the time of shipment, how many of the 33 parts will actually be supplied. The balance will be refunded to me. The most important part is the boot lid spoiler which is broken currently, the metal channels that support the windows, and the different side axle boots. The axle boots are actually supplied as a kit with 8-10 parts that include circlips, the boot itself, clips to tighten the boot, and even tubes of grease; Hyundai really thought this through! Sundry backup items are the brake piston overhaul kits, steering rack seal kits, coolant hoses, ball joints, and a thermostat. I tried getting the auto trans coolant lines but they aren’t available even in Korea.
I was so hopeful this would be done by August end but that’s not happening… Oh well. I’ll leave you with a nice video of another EF-B V6 Sonata.
