One Maruti Jimny owner from Kolkata faced the same issue and the check engine light came up on his car.
BHPian Samba recently shared this with other enthusiasts:
9,000 km update
This post is to highlight the niggles of the Jimny. The good part has been discussed a lot.
1) Scratch marks on the propeller shaft
Status- Unresolved
2) Brakes
Mine is an MT. Let me share one incident I faced. This has no link with the above-shared link. I was in a hurry, & immediately after starting the car I took it out of the garage and applied the brakes to stop. I found the brake pedal to be hard.
Solution- When we start the car & the engine is cold, the idling rpm reaches nearly 1,500. Then slowly it takes a few seconds to come down to 750 rpm. We must give that time to create the vacuum. Before that, if we try to move the car and apply the brakes, the pedal may feel hard. So it’s a good practice to move ahead once the rpm settles down to 750.
Status – I won’t call it an issue yet, though I’m yet to test it above 10,000 feet altitude where the real problem has been reported.
3) Starting trouble
This issue has not yet been reported anywhere, but it needs attention-
I mentioned this earlier while compiling the ownership review.
I have faced this twice in the last 1,500 km. Now this happens on the flat surface as well.
What exactly happens?
On the first crank, the self keeps rotating and the car does not start. I need to push the start/stop button or release the clutch to stop the self from rotating.
On the 2nd crank, it takes longer but the car starts.
Now, from the Jimny owners group, I found that at least 4-5 owners have faced the same issue. I have taken my car to the service center to get this checked but they got no error codes.
Still, I have officially lodged it as a complaint, & I mailed the video clip of this, which I took out from my car’s dashcam.
Luckily one owner from Kolkata faced the same issue and the check engine light came up on his car. When he took his car to the service center, he got this error code-
The service center that he visited, instead of finding the root cause, deleted the code and let him go, & for us, they keep saying unless the car generates an error code they can’t do anything!
In the 9,000 km, I faced this randomly a few times. This is hard to replicate. This can happen when the engine is hot or even when the engine is cold.
Status- Unresolved
4) Steering off-center
In many Jimnys including mine, the steering wheel is slightly off-center towards the right.
Status- Resetting the steering angle sensor and then getting an alignment done solves this. I have not tried to get this sorted. As there is no alignment issue or uneven tire wear. As of now, I’m ignoring this.
5) Brake Juddering or wobble
Few owners who have covered more than 15,000 to 20,000 km have reported this issue.
I have not faced this issue.
Status – Replacing the brake disc solved it for a few people & a few owners suspect a faulty panhard rod.
Here’s what BHPian bravo6 had to say about the matter::
When parking, are you in the habit of switching off the engine first and then applying brake?
If not, this looks like a design flaw, there should be enough residual pressure for at least one full press of the brake pedal before engine is started, even if a car is idle for >1 month.
Try this:
- At the end of a drive, park vehicle, engage handbrake, turn off engine
- Pump the brake pedal till it becomes super hard, to drain all residual brake booster pressure
- Allow the B pedal to return to it’s rest position
- Apply light pressure on the B pedal
- Restart engine
- Check how many seconds pass before the booster pressure builds up and the B pedal moves down
Here’s what BHPian man_of_steel had to say about the matter:
As shown in the error code list, a faulty Crank/Cam Position Sensor can cause this starting issue. But it should have always thrown an MIL.
Here’s what BHPian buzzy_boy had to say about the matter:
This seems to be a common issue even in international 3-door Jimnys – especially when they’re lifted. So, the lift kits provide modified cross-members.
It seems to me that they didn’t take this into account when designing the 5-door. Affected members could see if modifying their cross-members could help!
