Indian-Origin Man Sues Hospital for $1 Billion

Indian Sues Australian HospitalAn Indian-origin man from Telugu states, Anil Koppula, residing in Australia, recently made headlines by filing a staggering $1 billion (approximately ₹5,000 crores) lawsuit against the Royal Women’s Hospital in Melbourne.

He claimed that he developed a “psychotic illness” after being allowed to witness his wife’s C-section childbirth in January 2018, during which he saw her internal organs and blood.

Mr. Koppula alleged that the hospital had encouraged or permitted him to observe the procedure, breaching their duty of care, and sought damages for the purported harm caused.

However, the legal saga took an unexpected turn when the Supreme Court in Victoria dismissed Mr. Koppula’s claim, deeming it an “abuse of process.”

The hospital successfully argued that it had not breached its duty of care and Mr. Koppula had not suffered any substantial injury due to the observed operation.

Additionally, the court ruled that he did not meet the criteria for a “serious injury” and had not incurred any economic losses. Consequently, the judge ruled against awarding any damages.
