The US government has just announced the relaunch of their free COVID rapid test program. Starting September 25, free at-home COVID-19 testing kits will be available for order through the postal service.
The revival of this free testing program follows a period in which Americans faced a resurgence of COVID cases, with widespread access to free testing no longer available.
The largest insurance companies ceased to reimburse the costs of retail at-home testing once the requirement to do so ended with the conclusion of the public health emergency in May.
Experts assert that free COVID testing has proven to be an effective public health tool, enabling individuals to ascertain their status before attending large gatherings or spending time with older or medically vulnerable individuals who remain at risk of severe disease even after being vaccinated.
Furthermore, there is a growing call for the White House and Congress to provide free N95 masks, as COVID cases are on the rise.
