A pro-Khalistan group, Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), has issued a video message threatening Hindus of Indian origin living in Canada. The group’s legal counsel, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, asked them to “leave Canada and go to India” for supporting the country of their origin and “promoting violence” by celebrating the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Nijjar, who was the chief of Khalistan Tiger Force, was shot dead outside a Sikh temple in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18. His killing sparked a diplomatic row between India and Canada, with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleging a “potential link” between Indian government agents and the incident. India dismissed his claim as “absurd and motivated” and accused Canada of sheltering Khalistani terrorists and extremists.
Pannun also urged Canadian Sikhs to participate in a referendum on October 29 in Vancouver to vote if the Indian High Commissioner Verma was responsible for Nijjar’s killing. He claimed that pro-Khalistan Sikhs “have always been loyal to Canada and always sided with Canada”.
The video has caused alarm among the Hindu community in Canada, who fear violence and intimidation from the pro-Khalistan elements. Some Hindu leaders have appealed for calm and urged the Canadian government to take action against the hate speech and threats.
