Thiruvananthapuram: The winners of the Thiruvonam Bumper Lottery held by the Kerala State Lotteries Department were announced at 2 pm on Wednesday. The first prize of Rs 25 crore went to ticket number TE 230662. The ticket which was sold by a Kozhikode agency was purchased in Walayar, Palakkad. One may wonder who has won the whopping Rs 25 crore amount. But chances are, you may never learn. Why? The following examples will tell you the reason.

A strange thing happened in the Kerala Lottery Commissioner’s office in June 2023, reports Kerala Kaumudi. The lucky winner of Vishu Bumper was finally identified as a native of Kozhikode. But that is all that the public will ever be told.

The winner requested to the lottery department not to disclose his/her information and left after accepting the prize money of Rs 7.58 crore after deducting tax.

The winner of that bumper draw had just about made it to the lottery department on June 22 with the ticket as the deadline to claim the prize was about to end. The name of the lucky winner will remain a secret as he has requested not to reveal his name.

In the year 2022 Onam Bumper Lottery, a native of Thiruvananthapuram who was the winner of the draw faced great difficulties from those who wanted him to give them financial aid or loans.

Similarly, in January last, OnManorama reported how in an unusual development, a lottery winner in Thrissur has chosen not to disclose his/her identity. Another winner of the Pooja Bumper which carries a first prize of Rs 10 crore also chose to remain anonymous. So is the lucky person who won the Rs 16 crore Christmas-New Year Bumper.

Winners can request the Kerala State Lotteries Department to not reveal his/her personal information.

Anoop, an auto driver, who won the Onam Bumper had later reportedly told the media that his family had to relocate to avoid the flow of constant pleas for loans, and financial assistance, not just from friends, relatives, neighbours, etc. but also from complete strangers.

Winners can rest assured that the details of a lottery winner do not fall under the purview of the Right To Information (RTI) Act, and the department cannot divulge the name of the winner without his/her consent. Winners can contact the lottery companies and take their dues or what remains after a 10% agency commission and 30% tax.
