Cricket returns to the Asian Games after 9 years, as the Indian women’s team begin their campaign against Malaysia in the first quarter-final of the continental extravaganza. However, the captain of the team Harmanpreet Kaur will not be part of this momentous occasion as India begin their quest for a gold medal. Dashing opener Smriti Mandhana will be leading the team in her absence.

Harmanpreet Kaur was handed a two-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following her outbutst against Bangladesh in an ODI match on July 24. The Indian captain kicked the stumps in frustration after being given out LBW in the match. In the post-match presentation ceremony, Kaur then vehenmenly criticized the umpiring and even took a dig at Bangladesh.

“I think (there is) a lot of learning for us from the game. Even apart from the cricket, the kind of umpiring that was happening, we were very surprised. The next time we come to Bangladesh we will make sure we have to deal with this type of umpiring and prepare ourselves accordingly,” Kaur had said.

As a result, Harmanpreet Kaur was handed a two-match ban by the ICC on two separate counts of breach of the Code of Conduct. She is thus not only missing the quarter-final against Malaysia, but will also miss the semi-final if India qualify.

She was found guilty of breaching the 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct“showing dissent at an umpire’s decision”. She was also fined 25 percent of her match fee for breaching the Level 1 of the ICC code of conduct in relation to “public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match.”

Malaysia, who qualified for the quarter final by playing the initial rounds, won the toss and decided to bowl first against India.
