Rohit Shetty’s popular cop universe, which began with Singham in 2011, has garnered immense popularity among audiences and is now in the process of creating its third installment.
Headlined by Ajay Devgn, this film series follows the journey of an honest police officer determined to eradicate crime in Maharashtra.
While the franchise has achieved blockbuster status, Bombay High Court Judge Gautam Patel has expressed concerns about the message it conveys.
Speaking at an event organized by the Indian Police Foundation, Judge Patel criticized how films like “Singham” portray the judiciary as passive and ineffective while glorifying the hero cop who dispenses justice single-handedly. He pointed out that such narratives send a dangerous message by promoting impatience with due legal processes that are designed to protect individual liberties.
Judge Patel also noted that the popular image of the police as bullies, corrupt, and unaccountable contributes to a troubling sentiment where the public celebrates extrajudicial actions, such as encounters, as justice served. He questioned whether this perception aligns with the principles of a fair and just society.
Despite these concerns, the “Singham” franchise continues to thrive, with its third installment, “Singham Again,” currently in production, featuring an ensemble cast including Deepika Padukone, Kareena Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Akshay Kumar, Jackie Shroff, and Arjun Kapoor.
