Throw from a distance of 20 feet, straight on the stumps and the batsman is out of the field. You must have often seen Jadeja doing this on the field.

Pakistani batsman Shoaib Malik was the victim of Jadeja’s bullet throw in the Champions Trophy. What is the science behind this skill?

In this episode of Science of Cricket, we will talk about this skill of fielding…

Which science is there in ball throwing?

One rule of motion applies in throwing – Projectile Motion Law. When we throw something parallel to the ground, how far it will go depends on the angle of throwing, force and gravity.

The rule says that as the angle changes the distance also changes. This effect is most visible up to 45 degrees, but the distance decreases as the angle increases.

This science is applicable not only to the throws of Virat or Jadeja, but also to the javelin throw of Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra.

How does science work?

Two types of throws are seen in the field. One very fast and the other leisurely. It depends on the condition.

When the fielder feels that the batsman will easily complete the run, he throws the throw comfortably… at about 60 degrees.

But when chances of run out are high then this angle reduces to 30 degrees. Here the ball travels the same distance, but due to the low degree, the flight time of the ball i.e. the time it remains in the air decreases and the ball reaches the wicket faster.

What is special in Jadeja’s throw?

Jadeja usually fields at point in the 30 yard circle. Their reaction time is less. Jadeja throws at an angle of less than 45 degrees, this reduces the flight time and the ball reaches the stumps quickly. When Jadeja releases the ball, the speed is 26 m/second, which means the ball hits the stumps in less than a second.
