Second partying of classic movies is becoming a trend now. The list goes on and on of sequels that are more durable than their predecessors and those that didn’t even do justice to the first one and flopped in theaters. Manichitrathaz, which has not disappeared from Malayali’s favorite list, was remade in many languages. The Tamil version of Rajinikanth starrer Chandramukhi was a huge hit in Tamil. It took 18 long years for the director to make the second part of it.
A wealthy family faces constant problems. As a remedy for their condition, a journey is made for the puja of Kula Daiva. They come to stay at the old Vettaiya Puram Palace, which is believed to be haunted. Then the story moves forward with the events that happen in their lives.
If Chandramukhi is based on mental health, the second part is a typical horror movie. Therefore, director P Vasu has introduced significant changes in the storyline. The problems, love and affection in a joint family have been captured by the director in a good way, touching the pulse of the Tamil audience.
While Raghava Lawrence played the central role of Pandyan, Vadivelu wowed as Murugesan in the first part. The comedy scenes between them are well worked out. Mahima Nambiar, who became famous with RDX movie, has played a good role in the movie. Along with this, Malayali Lakshmi Menon, Radhika Sarath Kumar, Srishti Dhanke, Subhiksha and Suresh Menon, who played a handful of good heroine roles, all did justice to their characters.
Now let’s come to the main character Chandramukhi. Chandramukhi, who was presented only as a portrait in the first part, has been given a face by the director in this part. Bollywood star Kangana can’t be said to be a smash hit as Chandramukhi, but she has portrayed the character well in her limited screen time. The story that happened in Chandramukhi’s life is a lesson in the mind of the audience but there is a twist in the story that makes them all just a myth. Apart from this change, the film written and directed by P.Vasu can only be described as a modern adaptation of the old story.
The music composed by Oscar winner MM Keeravani has not been able to stay long in the minds of the moviegoers. However, the background music is well placed in each scene. RD Chandrasekhar’s cinematography was a pillar of the film. The movie is produced by Subhaskaran’s Laika, which has produced many hit films. If you don’t compare it with the old story, you can see Chandramukhi as a horror comedy entertainer.
