Antoine Dupont has been “very active in training” and is “at 100%” before a potential Rugby World Cup return, said France forwards coach William Servat.

France captain Dupont, 26, suffered a fractured cheekbone in the pool game against Namibia on 21 September.

He was cleared to resume full training on Monday and could be involved in his side’s quarter-final against South Africa in Paris on Sunday.

Coach Fabien Galthie is scheduled to name his team for the game on Friday.

Servat said: “Antoine is doing very well, he needed to recuperate. He’s been involved in the team’s strategic choices and the changes we’re making to the game.

“Today [Wednesday] he was even more involved. He’s back with us and he’s very active in training.”

The Springboks, winners of the World Cup in 2019, are expected to provide a stern physical test for the host nation in their last-eight tie.

However, asked whether France would need to alter their defensive plans if Dupont is selected and there are any concerns about his injury, Servat added: “Antoine is one of the best defenders in the team and he’s at 100%. There’s no reason to change anything.”

France won all four of their group games to top Pool A, with South Africa finishing second behind Ireland in Pool B to qualify for the quarter-finals.
