Disney+ Hotstar set a new record for viewership during any cricket match across all formats during the India Vs Pakistan game in the Cricket World Cup 2023. Disney beat the previous record set by JioCinema during the final Of IPL 2023. Disney+ Hotstar recorded 3.5 crore people watching the game simultaneously. This breaks the previous record of 3.3 crores of JioCinema.
Disney and Jio have been trying to assert complete dominance in the streaming business and therefore using lucrative business plans like broadcasting for free. The Cricket World Cup 2023 is being broadcasted for free, a strategy earlier used by JioCinema during the IPL 2023.
It is expected that new records might be set as the World Cup advances to playoffs and given its free broadcast. The move has definitely helped increase digital viewership of the game significantly.
