Maruti Suzuki India Limited crosses the 10 lakh automatic vehicle sales milestone in the country. MSIL currently offers four distinct automatic transmission systems – Auto Gear Shift (AGS or AMT), 4-speed torque convertor automatic (4AT), a 6-speed torque convertor automatic with steering mounted paddle shifters and electronic-continuous variable transmission (e-CVT) across 16 models.
In 2014, Maruti Suzuki introduced AGS technology which received positive response from car buyers. Around 65% of the automatic vehicles sold by Maruti are equipped with automated manual transmission or AGS. The share of the torque convertors account for 27% of total MSIL automatic sales, while the hybrid e-CVT transmission constitutes about 8% of MSIL automatic sales.
Maruti Suzuki claims that Nexa customers prefer high-end automatic variants. On the other hand, Arena customers prefer mid-variants when making a purchase decision. NEXA accounts for about 58% of automatic car sales at MSIL, while Arena contributes about 42%. Top contributing regions for to Maruti Suzuki’s automatic car sales include the Delhi & NCR region, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Telangana and Kerela.
The Alto K10, S-Presso, Celerio, WagonR, Ignis, Swift, Dzire, Baleno and Fronx are offered with a 5-speed automated manual transmission. The 4-speed automatic gearbox is offered in the Jimny and Ciaz. On the other hand, the Fronx, Brezza, Ertiga, XL6 and Grand Vitara are equipped with 6-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox. The e-CVT technology is exclusively offered in the Electric Hybrid models of the Grand Vitara and the Invicto.
