Tata Motors has launched the Harrier and Safari facelifts at a starting price of Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 16.19 lakh, respectively (all prices, ex-showroom). Both SUVs have also received 5 star crash test rating for adult as well as child protection by Global NCAP (New Car Assessment Program).
It was speculated that the new Harrier and Safari SUVs will be offered with petrol and diesel engine options; that didn’t happen. Both SUVs are launched with a sole diesel engine option only. At the launch event, Tata Motors has confirmed that the new SUVs will be offered with new turbo petrol motor in 2024.
For people not in the know, Tata Motors had showcased two new turbo petrol engines – a 1.5-litre TGDi four-cylinder and a 1.2-litre TGDi 3-cylinder – at the 2023 Auto Expo. The 1.5L TGDi turbo petrol engine will power the new Harrier & Safari SUVs, while the 1.2L turbo petrol engine is expected to power the Curvv SUV Coupe.
The new 1.5-litre TGDi four-cylinder turbo petrol engine is capable of producing 168bhp of power and 280Nm of torque. This powertrain is likely to be offered with a six-speed manual and a dual-clutch automatic transmission. Currently, the updated Harrier & Safari are powered by the same 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine that produces 168bhp and 350Nm of torque. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque convertor automatic. The automatic variants come equipped with paddle shifters and an electronic parking brake.
The new Harrier and Safari comes equipped with several new features including a bigger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch digital instrument console, a new four-spoke steering wheel and a new touch-based climate control panel. In terms of features, the new SUVs get dual-zone climate control, ventilated & powered front seats with a memory function, ADAS, a 360 degree camera, a panoramic sunroof and a gesture-controlled powered tailgate.
