David Warner overtakes Ricky Ponting to register most World Cup centuries by an Australian player | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: David Warner created history on Wednesday by surpassing the iconic Australian batsman and former captain Ricky Ponting to claim the record for the most centuries by an Australian batter in the ICC World Cup.
Warner achieved this feat during his team’s World Cup 2023 match against the Netherlands at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

In the game, Warner produced a remarkable innings, scoring 104 runs off 93 balls, including 11 fours and three sixes, at a strike rate exceeding 111.

This marked his second consecutive century in the tournament, following his impressive 163 against Pakistan.

With this achievement, Warner now boasts six World Cup centuries, surpassing Ponting’s previous record of five centuries in his World Cup career.
Additionally, Warner joins Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar with the second-highest number of World Cup centuries, as both have six centuries each. Indian captain Rohit Sharma has secured the highest tally, notching his seventh World Cup century in this tournament against Afghanistan, a record in its own right.
Warner has also climbed to fifth place in the list of the highest run-scorers in World Cup history, surpassing Brian Lara and Rohit. In his 23 World Cup appearances, Warner has amassed 1,384 runs at an impressive average of 63.04 and a strike rate exceeding 100. He has registered six centuries and three fifties in these 23 innings.

The highest run-scorer in the tournament’s history remains Tendulkar, who accumulated 2,278 runs in 45 matches and 44 innings at an average of 56.95, featuring six centuries and 15 fifties, with a best score of 152.
