TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu is not the only former chief minister in India to have been sent to jail. Several former chief ministers across the country have faced imprisonment over the years.
Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi was sent to jail, and so was his successor, J Jayalalithaa, who was incarcerated in 2014 while serving as the state’s chief minister.
Laloo Prasad Yadav, former Chief Minister of Bihar, was sentenced to 14 years in prison in 2017. Similarly, Jharkhand’s ex-Chief Minister Madhu Koda was arrested in 2009 and imprisoned the same year.
Haryana’s former Chief Minister, Om Prakash Chautala, was arrested in 2013 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegally appointing over 3000 teachers during his tenure.
Even former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi faced arrest and imprisonment. P V Narasimha Rao, another former Prime Minister, was sentenced but was not incarcerated for different reasons.
What’s interesting is that none of these former chief ministers received the privileges currently being granted to Naidu. They were not provided with amenities like air conditioning or allowed to have home-cooked food daily during their jail terms.
