A non-local labourer was allegedly shot dead by the suspected militants in South Kashmir’s Pulwama on Monday. The police identified the slain labourer as Mukesh, a resident of Uttar Pradesh. The killing of a non-local worker is the first such murder in the valley this year.

Suspected militants fired at the labourer at Tumchi village of Pulwama district in South Kashmir, said the police. The labourer was critically injured in the attack and succumbed to injuries later, they added.

“Terrorists fired upon on a labourer identified as Mukesh of Uttar Pradesh in Tumchi Nowpora area of Pulwama, who later on succumbed to his injuries. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow,” J-K Police said in a post on X.

The attack has come a day after a police inspector was shot at and critically injured in Srinagar. Inspector Masroor Ahmad was fired at from point-blank range at Eidgah ground in Srinagar while he was playing cricket.

This was the second militant attack on the outside workers in the valley this year. On July 13, three non-local construction workers from Bihar were injured when militants fired on them at the Gagran village of south Kashmir’s Shopian.

While the attacks on the non-local labourers started in the valley in 2019 after the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, the attacks saw a sharp increase in 2022. Last year, 10 non-local workers, including a bank manager from Rajasthan and a teacher, were killed and over a dozen injured in a series of militant attacks, mostly in south Kashmir.
