Who hasn’t had a glass of warm water and ajwain when their stomach refuses to behave? Ajwain or carom seeds have fixed many an erring digestive tract and not only that, they are also a powerhouse of protein, fats in the form of oil, minerals and lots of fibre, according to Dr Nirupama Rao, nutritionist, Rejua Energy Centre, Mumbai.

“It also comprises of calcium, potassium, sodium, phosphorus, thiamine, iron and niacin,” she said.

Powerful anti-bacterial: Carom seeds have powerful antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Lowers bad cholesterol: Carom seed extract is effective in lowering total cholesterol, triglyceride, and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels while also increasing levels of heart-protective HDL (good) cholesterol.

Prevents gastric issues: Carom seed extract also helps prevent and treat gastric issues and chronic indigestion.

Relieves cough: Carom seeds have anti-coughing effects, relieves cough and help increase airflow to the lungs.

Dr Rao said ajwain seeds must be consumed by diabetes patients regularly as they can stabilise blood glucose level.

It can be added to curries and rotis or consumed after meals, she advised.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

As indigestion is very common even with pregnant ladies; hence ajwain water is also recommended to them, Dr Rao said, but before consuming, she suggested taking advice from a medical professional.

Things to keep in mind

Over-consumption may lead to several adverse effects, according to Dr Rao. “It may cause stomach ulcer and heartburns, or lead to dizziness and nausea.”
