Apple has good news for iPhone 14 users who want to stay safe in case of an emergency. The company has announced that it is extending the free trial of its Emergency SOS via satellite feature for another year. This means that iPhone 14 users can contact emergency services without any cellular or Wi-Fi connection by using a satellite link for two more years without any charge.

The Emergency SOS via satellite feature was launched with the iPhone 14 last year and has been a game-changer for people in distress. The feature allows users to point their device at a satellite in the sky and send a message to emergency responders with their location and situation. The feature has been used to rescue people from life-threatening situations, such as a car crash, a mountain hike, or a natural disaster.

Apple originally planned to offer the feature for free for two years, implying that it might charge for it in the future. However, the company has decided to extend the free trial for iPhone 14 users who activated their device in a country that supports the feature before November 15, 2023. Anyone who buys an iPhone 14 after that date will not be eligible for the free trial.

“We are thrilled to hear how Emergency SOS via satellite has helped save lives around the world. From a man who was rescued after his car plummeted over a 400-foot cliff in Los Angeles, to lost hikers found in the Apennine Mountains in Italy, we continue to hear stories of our customers being able to connect with emergency responders when they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to,” said Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of iPhone Product Marketing.

The feature is also available on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro, which have added Roadside Assistance via satellite to the service. The feature currently works in several regions although India isn’t among the supported countries list.
