The year 2023 witnessed the release of several major blockbusters, including “Pathaan,” “Jawan,” “Gadar 2,” “Jailer,” and “Leo.” Notably, all these films were high-octane action dramas or thrillers. However, industry insiders are now speculating that audiences may be getting bored of the relentless stream of action-packed films, indicating a potential desire for a change in genre.
The lukewarm reception of last week’s release, “Tiger 3,” has added fuel to these speculations, suggesting that audiences might be fatigued by the saturation of non-stop action films.
Salman Khan’s “Tiger 3,” in particular, faced criticism for its excessive action sequences without a proper storyline or emotional depth, leading to a disconnect with the audience. There were also reports that the audience was losing patience during the second half of Leo due to too many fights one after the other.
The upcoming release, “Animal,” starring Ranbir Kapoor, is poised to be another big action film, featuring intense violence, gore, and bloodshed in the style of director Sandeep Reddy Vanga.
The year is expected to conclude with the highly anticipated “Salaar,” touted as the baap of all action films. However, a segment of the industry is expressing concern that by the time “Salaar” hits theaters, audiences may have reached their saturation point with action-packed movies.
The debate centers on whether viewers will be willing to embrace yet another action film after a year filled with a monthly barrage of similar films.
Critics dismissing “Salaar” as just another mindless action film may be in for a surprise. If director Prashanth Neel has successfully captured the intensity of action scenes for which he is renowned, even a modest storyline and screenplay could make “Salaar” a big success.
Contrary to the belief that “Tiger 3” failed due to an excess of action scenes, the real issue lay in the poor execution and staging of those sequences. Unless “Salaar” suffers from a lackluster narrative and poorly executed action, there is currently little cause for concern.
With the potential to resonate strongly in most mass centers, barring a few elite centers in the North where heavy action films might not receive an extraordinary response, “Salaar” is expected to open strongly and sustain itself well if the action scenes meet expectations.
