  • Every 11 years, storms on the surface of the Sun affect the Earth

Massive magnetic storms occur on the surface of the Sun every 11 years. Next year is the year of these storms. This storm that originates on the surface of the Sun affects the Earth. So next year it will affect satellites, communication, aviation etc.

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (ESER) in Kolkata have warned that these storms will take the most aggressive form in the year 2024. The distance of the sun from the earth is 15 crore kilometers. But the storms arising from the surface of the sun are so enormous that they do not stay without hitting the earth. Magnetic winds flow across the surface of the Sun. As the Sun’s atmosphere twists, mass is thrown away with these winds, which strike the planets, including Earth, as storms.

The temperature of these winds coming from the surface of the Sun is more than 1 million degrees centigrade. Earth also has its own magnetic field, but the Sun’s magnetic wind is 10,000 times stronger. The fourth form of matter not found on Earth (three forms: solid, liquid, gas) is abundant in the Sun. Plasma is what powers these winds to reach Earth and far into space. This is the 25th cycle that scientists have noticed.

Satellites are most affected
Solar storms often render satellites useless when they hit Earth, scientists said. Some satellites are temporarily out of service and some permanently. This affects all communication or other functions connected to the satellite earth.
