Australia first started the practice of naming storms in the 19th century. After that, England also named storms, but it was not consistent. In this situation, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) divided 191 countries into six special zones. The head office in each zone named storms. Having been empowered to do so, India falls within the North Indian Ocean region. While there are 13 countries including Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the North Indian Ocean region, the Indian Meteorological Center is the head office of this. Based on the suggestions given by the member countries, it is customary to give names to the storms formed in this region in a cyclical manner.
In 2020, each of the member countries has nominated 13 names, a total of 169 names have been prepared.
