Surat has stepped up preparation amid a surge in cases of pneumonia among minors due to a new virus in China. Over 1,700 beds with 780 ventilators have been kept ready in city hospitals.

SMC Deputy Health Commissioner Dr Ashish Naik said, “We followed all the instructions and guidelines issued by the state health department and Centre. All logistics are in place and pediatric doctors and surgeons have been alerted. We have also carried out mock drills successfully..”
New Civil Hospital’s medical superintendent Dr Ganesh Govekar said, “We are ready with 1,000 beds with oxygen facilities. Over 400 beds with a ventilator facility have been kept ready.”
