Cyclone Michaung Live Updates: The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal on Sunday intensified into a cyclonic storm ‘Michaung’ and is likely to cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5 with a maximum sustained wind speed of 80-90 kmph gusting to 100 kmph, the IMD said in a bulletin, reported PTI. The system could result in heavy rains in most parts of southern Odisha and coastal region of the state, it said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Sunday said that the Centre is in constant touch with governments of states on the eastern coast, for coordinating relief and rescue efforts once Cyclone Michaung makes landfall. In addition to this, Modi urged BJP workers in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh to join the relief and rescue efforts and support the local administration. Earlier, the Prime Minister had spoken to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to take stock of preparations to handle Cyclone Michaung, assuring him of all help, PTI quoted officials as saying.

On Friday, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC), headed by Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, reviewed preparedness of state governments and central ministries and departments for impending cyclone ‘Michaung’ in the Bay of Bengal. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has made 18 teams available to Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Puducherry and 10 additional teams have been kept ready. Rescue and relief teams of the Coast Guard, Army and Navy along with ships and aircraft have been kept ready on standby, the statement said. Coastal districts along north Tamil Nadu and neighbouring southern Andhra Pradesh are bracing for cyclone Michaung early next week.

Cyclonic storm to form over Bay of Bengal by December 2: IMD

The India Meteorological Department has forecast a cyclonic storm over the Bay of Bengal around December 2, the weather forecast bulletin on Thursday stated.

A well marked low pressure area lying over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a depression in the next 24 hours, the bulletin said. Further, the depression is likely to intensify gradually into a cyclonic storm around December 2, it said.

Fisherfolks are advised not to venture into southeast Bay of Bengal from Thursday (November 30) to December 3. Those out at sea are urged to return to Andaman and Nicobar Islands and coast by Thursday.

The weather department said heavy rainfall is likely over Puducherry from Thursday to December 4; Kerala and Mahe on Thursday and Friday and over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam from Saturday to December 4. Central Maharashtra and Marathwada are likely to receive light isolated rainfall with thunderstorm and hailstorm.
