Shai Hope credits MS Dhoni’s wisdom for masterful run chase: You always have a lot more time | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: West Indies captain Shai Hope revealed the influence of a conversation with cricket legend MS Dhoni, crediting the former Indian captain for his masterful century that propelled the West Indies to a thrilling four-wicket victory over England in the first ODI.
Hope, who scored an unbeaten 109 to guide the Caribbean side to their highest ODI run chase against England, shared insights from his chat with Dhoni about spending time at the crease.

Hope recalled Dhoni’s advice, saying: “A very, very famous person, MS Dhoni – we had a chat a while ago, and he was saying, ‘You always have a lot more time than you think.’ That is one thing that has stuck with me throughout the years I have been playing ODI cricket.”

The West Indies skipper’s century played a pivotal role in chasing down England’s total of 325, with seven deliveries remaining. Hope’s innings, characterised by seven sixes, showcased his ability to control the game and adhere to the advice imparted by Dhoni.
Hope also praised all-rounder Romario Shepherd for his outstanding contribution in the match, stating, “He was amazing. He is one of those guys you can depend on, and he has continued to show his worth at this level.”

Reflecting on the overall performance, Hope acknowledged England’s strong start but emphasised the need for West Indies to improve their bowling in the initial phase. He highlighted the importance of consistent performances to be recognized as the best team globally.
“Their openers played really well, we need to try to start a bit better in the next game. We also had a few dropped catches, if you want to be the best team in the world, you also have to start playing like the best team in the world,” said Hope.
The West Indies skipper expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, especially the responsibility taken by the openers. He concluded, “Nice to see the openers taking responsibility, they are both great players. It is about seeing how we can continue to repeat these performances.”
Hope was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding century, and West Indies now lead the three-match series 1-0.
