Bharatpur founder Maharaja Surajmal is honored with adjectives like great warrior, administrator, protector of religion etc., but another quality of his was to protect the refugees. Historian Ramveer Singh Verma tells that that was the infancy of Bharatpur. Big princely states were trying to distance themselves from the war between Maratha and Ahmed Shah Abdali in 1761, but Maharaja Surajmal was ready to support. In the war council meeting, Maharaja Surajmal suggested that the war was being fought by the powerful and barbaric non-aggressors. In such a situation, unnecessary pomp and show including children, women and dancers should not be taken into war.
