DC’s 2023 Was Flashy But Dim

DC is rebooting, indeed nothing new, but this was a necessary step. Now, you might ask, how was DCEU’s 2023? In short, this year has definitely been the worst one for DC as the finances are dropping below average.

This year, DC dropped four films this year, and none of them has drawn that much attention. Though a couple of them carried considerably big titles like “The Flash,” none of the excitement reflected in the results.

“Shazam” came out as the first DC film but took a massive hit at the box office. Barely crossing the budget, “Shazam 2” registers just $132M, but the trend of flops transitioned to “The Flash” as well. Firstly, it was indeed one of the most awaited films of the DC universe.

The film, despite its good reviews, didn’t just fall flat; it was brutally slapped at the box office. With a big budget and massive cast, it didn’t pay off, as Flash, though definitely the fastest man alive, couldn’t run the failure off. Just grossing $266M, it became the standpoint for the reboot of the universe.

Then came “Blue Beetle,” at a time which can’t be worse for launching a new character. The Latino superhero fell flat with the box office numbers of $128M, just crossing the threshold of the niche.

And “Aquaman” also is riding the same track as it did have a slow start. But again, Aquaman’s popularity in China will definitely be a big reason behind its massive box office; as of now, it looks stumbling, that’s for sure.

But as the studio is looking for a reboot, the box office doesn’t really matter as the slate is going to be wiped out anyway. But as of 2023, the year hasn’t been a kind one for the mainstream comic book films.
