After the earthquake in 2011, 16 thousand people died due to the tsunami
In March 2011, a devastating 9 magnitude earthquake triggered a tsunami in Japan. The tsunami waves at sea destroyed the Fukushima nuclear plant. This was considered a major event in terms of environmental damage. After that, the 10 meter high waves in the sea caused havoc in many cities. About 16 thousand people died in this.

Japan is situated on the Ring of Fire
Japan is one of the most earthquake prone areas. Earthquakes occur here because it is located near the junction of two tectonic plates. Ishikawa Province, where the earthquake occurred, is located near the Ring of Fire—a horseshoe-shaped line of four oceanic core earthquake fault lines—near the Ring of Fire.

The Ring of Fire is an area where oceanic tectonic plates lie along with continental plates. Earthquakes occur when these plates collide with each other. It is due to its effect that tsunamis occur and volcanoes also erupt.

90% of the world's earthquakes occur in this Ring of Fire. This area is spread over 40 thousand kilometers. 75% of all active volcanoes in the world are in this region. 15 countries – Japan, Russia, Philippines, Indonesia, New Zealand, Antarctica, Canada, America, Mexico, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Peru, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia are in the Ring of Fire.

Every year there are 20,000 earthquakes in the world
Every year there are many earthquakes in the world, but their intensity is low. The National Earthquake Information Center records about 22,000 earthquakes every year. 100 of them are earthquakes, which cause more damage. Earthquakes last for a few seconds or a few minutes. The longest lasting earthquake in history occurred in 2004 in the Indian Ocean. The earthquake lasted for 10 minutes.
