A Japan Airlines aircraft with passengers still on board caught fire today at Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday after a possible collision with a Coast Guard aircraft. Five of the six crew member of the Japanese Coast Guard aircraft have died and the captain of the plane is seriously injured, NHK reported quoting the Metropolitan Police

Live footage on public broadcaster NHK showed flames coming out of the windows of the aircraft.

A spokesperson at Japan Airlines said the aircraft, originating from Shin-Chitose airport in Hokkaido, was carrying nearly 400 passengers. NHK reported that all passengers and crew have been safely evacuated.

Four of the six people on the coast guard plane have died after it reportedly collided with a Japan Airlines plane on the runway of Tokyo’s Haneda Airport today, broadcaster NHK said.  “There were 6 people in the aircraft, of which one escaped, and the safety of five people is unknown,” the Japan Coast Guard told NHK.

This is worst aviation accident Japan has witnessed since 1985 when a JAL jumbo jet flying from Tokyo to Osaka crashed in central Gunma region, killing 520 passengers and crew.

Five people onboard Japan coast guard plane, that collided with the Japan Airlines A350 airbus, are unaccounted for, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK reported.

Japan Airlines Latest Updates: There was also burning debris on the runway. More than 70 fire engines were being deployed, NHK reported.

Japan has not suffered a serious commercial aviation accident in decades.

All the runways on the Haneda airport in Tokyo have been closed since 6 pm (Japan time) or  2:30 pm IST.

Japan Airlines Plane Fire: There were no advisories issued for heavy rain or thunder in the area around the airport.

Latest Update: According to the Japan Coast Guard, the aircraft that collided with the Japan Airlines aircraft was an MA722 fixed-wing aircraft belonging to Haneda Air Base, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said.

Data from FlightRadar24, an online aircraft tracker, shows that Japan Airlines’ Airbus A350 took off from the Sapporo airport in Japan to land in Tokyo. The flight time of the aircraft, with registration number JA13XJ, was 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The last recorded ground speed of the aircraft was 123 knots or 227 km/hr and after that the FlightRadar24 stopped picking data.

The CCTV footage of the incident shows the plane in flames on the runway and a team of fire fighters dousing the fire. All 367 passengers have been safely evacuated.
