Will questions not be raised on the pitch now?
There was so much bounce on the Newlands pitch that it would certainly come under the radar of ICC match referee Chris Broad. The red Kookaburra ball appeared to be flying like a 'jumbo jet', making it impossible for the batsmen to stay on the crease. At the end of the day the bounce was changing so much that the batsmen were hit with the ball from shoulder to stomach.
Lowest score after withdrawal
Earlier, on a pitch that looked difficult for batting, Siraj took six wickets for 15 runs in his first spell of nine consecutive overs. The South African batsmen failed to deal with the uneven bounce and movement they received from the pitch. This is South Africa's lowest score in Test cricket since its return to international cricket in 1991. Before Siraj, in the country's 92-year Test history, such a brilliant performance before lunch is in the name of left-arm spinner Maninder Singh, who had achieved the feat of taking five wickets before lunch against Pakistan in Bengaluru in 1986-87.
only two in double digits
On a humid morning on Wednesday, South African batsmen had a lot of trouble coping with Siraj's pace, swing and seam movement, due to which the entire team reached the pavilion in just 23.2 overs in the first innings. David Bedingham (12) and Kyle Warren (15) were the only two batsmen to reach double figures, leaving the South African crowd in the stands disappointed. Siraj bowled three maidens in nine overs. Jasprit Bumrah also maintained the pressure from the other end due to which Rohit also left no stone unturned to trouble rival team captain Dean Elgar in his farewell test. Mukesh Kumar (two wickets without giving any runs) contained the tail batsmen.
