Mahesh Babu is coming back to the big screens with Guntur Kaaram which is hitting the marquee on the 12th of this month. The film is carrying decent hype, but it needs to be said that the atmosphere doesn’t quite reflect the kind of euphoria that is expected from a Mahesh-Trivikram film coming during the Sankranthi season.
In 2020, Mahesh’s Sarileru Neekevvaru clashed with Allu Arjun’s Ala Vaikunthapurramulo, and both films fed off the box office clash factor to attain great pre-release hype. This clash aspect kept the public’s attention entirely on both films as there was a comparison between the songs, posters, and ultimately, the box office run.
A similar thing was seen in 2023 between Veera Simha Reddy and Waltair Veerayya. The clash of Chiru and Balayya brought mass hype to both films.
But this time around, there is no clash for Guntur Kaaram as it is the only Telugu superstar film releasing this Sankranthi. Other releases like Saindhav, Naa Saami Ranga, and Hanuman don’t make for a ‘clash’ with Mahesh’s film.
Usually, every Sankranthi we see at least two, if not three big films clashing at the box office. This comparison factor itself is enough for the films to be in the public’s attention. But that hasn’t happened this time with Guntur Kaaram this Sankranthi and it is clearly seen.
Perhaps Mahesh’s Guntur Kaaram needed an Allu Arjun like in the case of AVPL, or any other star hero for that matter to have a clash at the box office this Sankranthi which would’ve further heightened GK’s buzz.
But nevertheless, the brand values of Mahesh and Trivikram should be enough to pull revenues in big numbers this festival season. With no direct clash, Guntur Kaaram could be further benefitted as it will be the primary choice. This is perhaps the benefit of having no direct competition.
