WhatsApp, the world’s most popular instant messaging app, is getting more features every month. The Meta (Facebook)-owned firm is testing multiple new features every week, and it looks like the messaging app is about to bring more text formatting options to its users on Android and iOS.
WhatsApp gets multiple new text formatting options, but they’re under beta-testing
The beta versions of Android and iOS have introduced new options for text formatting. Apart from bold, italic, strikethrough, and underline, you can now arrange text in code blocks, bulleted lists, numbered lists, and quote blocks. These features were uncovered by the folks at WABetaInfo, who regularly uncover new and upcoming features that WhatsApp. As you can see in the image below, you can use single inverted commas or use the text formatting popup when you select text. It can be used to send codes, which could otherwise get formatted weirdly.
Quote blocks can be used to highlight a specific part of a message. It can be chosen by typing > and then your reply. Bulleted lists can be created using asterisks or dashes, while numbered lists can be initiated using numbers, as shown in the screenshot above. These features are now live in WhatsApp beta for Android with version 2.24.2.9 and WhatsApp beta for iOS version 23.21.1.75. They are currently under beta testing and could be released to everyone in the coming weeks.
WhatsApp originally introduced text formatting in 2017, but it was pretty basic back then. Over the years, the instant messaging app has introduced several features, including message replies, message reactions, high-quality image and video sharing, voice messages, disappearing messages, stickers, and message editing. WhatsApp has also made it easier to switch data from Android to iOS and vice versa. It also introduced a way to use the same account on multiple devices and multiple accounts on the same device.
