500 km with my Nexon facelift: Likes, dislikes & ownership experience

This is my first Tata car upgraded from Maruti’s ever-reliable WagonR.

BHPian Biker wanderer recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I completed the first 500 km drive in my new facelift Nexon and I am thrilled and relieved that the first 500 km have been very good if not great. Relieved because there was a lot of commotion about Tata’s reliability, after-sales experience, basic ownership reviews, etc. But I have not experienced any untoward experience so far.

Okay, first things first let me come to the likes and dislikes points.

Likes:

  1. Ride quality
  2. Safety features
  3. Build quality
  4. Overall exterior and interior design and layout
  5. Infotainment system
  6. Comfort

Dislikes:

  1. AMT gearbox
  2. Engine refinement
  3. Mileage
  4. Minor glitches in infotainment
  5. Missing out on key features like rear defogger and fog lamps
  6. Storage space in doors is inadequate.

This is my first Tata car upgraded from Maruti’s ever-reliable WagonR, hence was a bit skeptical about whether the decision to ditch Maruti Suzuki on grounds of build quality and safety would backfire. Though Nexon’s sales numbers have been a great comforter assuring that the product itself is good and is wanted by a lot of customers.

Drive and ride quality

Okay, I want to address the elephant in the room since I own an AMT I want to highlight its shortcomings. A typical AMT of course we all know isn’t as smooth as maybe a DCT or Torque converter. Well, it is cheap but then the experience of driving is compromised the pleasure that you get while driving a DCT or TC is not there in AMT. Also, you don’t get that adrenaline rush while driving a manual gearbox which I was so accustomed to. The gear changes are quite evident in the economy drive mode, you feel the jerks at lower gears but settle down at higher gears, and you can also feel gear shifts while climbing an incline in traffic. The gear shifts are not so evident in city and sports mode. I am a bit disappointed in the sense that I knew AMT won’t be as smooth but I was just hoping that would have done a better job. But all is not doom and gloom, it is not a deal breaker or a disaster by any means and one just needs to adapt to an AMT and it does a decent job. The engine is also pretty decent the noise levels are a bit high at lower RPMs, Tata needs to catch up with Hyundai and Maruti concerning engine refinement and smoothness. Though it has made great strides they have some distance to catch up with the above two. The 1.2 l revotron engine is quite good and overall does a decent job.

Ride quality

The ride quality is one of the best that I have experienced recently, the suspension is tuned perfectly not too stiff or too soft it is just perfect and I believe it is the highlight of the new Nexon. I do not the slightest of bumps and potholes filtering through to the cabin. I have driven sonet and venue and felt the shocks to my spine. The Nexon glides through the potholes and bad roads The insulation to filter out outside noise and engine noise is done pretty well.

Mileage

Yes, the MILEAGE the all-important ‘kitna deti hai?’ question arouses more anxiety and suspense than an India-Pakistan cricket match. Well, I have not measured the mileage by tank full-up method have been relying on the MID figures of the average. fuel consumption figures and the figures are not so encouraging I have driven so far in city limits and mostly in a lot of Pune traffic and the best mileage figure I have seen is 10 km/l. I don’t know if these are the correct figures and will these figures are here to stay while driving in the city or if will they improve after the first servicing there are a lot of uncertainties and question marks at the moment and I hope to get the answer of the same after 1st servicing. If any bhpians have their experiences regarding the mileage of the car please let me know in the comments.

Features

The car comes with a lot of bells and whistles and very happy to inform you that most of them offer great help to drivers. The best features are of course the blind spot monitoring reverse and front cameras. They are so useful and help the driver to park the car in a tight spot and manoeuvre through traffic easily. The camera clarity is just amazing, the best in the segment. TPMS, rain-sensing wipers, and auto headlamps are very useful. The auto climate control is very powerful and cools the cabin instantaneously while the real test will be in summer. The infotainment system is so damn good tata has done a fantastic job of it the 10-inch screen itself is very responsive and has loads of info. The navigation works well. The voice command also works fine, and wireless Android Auto is a great addition to have. The Harman 4 speakers and 2 Twitters are top-notch. The seats are comfortable, the boot space is very practical.

Final verdict

The first 500 have been great, the Nexon itself has been everything I expected it to be. Some miss but a lot of hits I am so much in love with my car my ownership experience has been great and overall If at all I have to rate my experience I would give it a solid 8/10. The car shines through in safety, ride quality, features practicality what it can improve on is the AMT gearbox for sure, and minor glitches in the infotainment system like during phone calls, for instance, engine refinement.
