Chelsea to trigger £86m release clause? Inside source has news

Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres is not high up the list of priority targets for Chelsea, sources have told Football Insider.

Football Insider revealed on Saturday (20 January) that the Blues have not yet made a firm move for the 25-year-old striker despite reports to the contrary.

Sporting boss Ruben Amorim has confirmed the existence of a release clause in Gyokeres’ contract – which is reportedly worth €100million (£86million).

It is believed Chelsea will not pay anywhere close to that figure if they are to follow up their interest.

Coventry will stand to benefit from any transfer for the Sweden international due to a sell-on clause.

A well-placed source has told Football Insider that the Blues are more likely to swoop for a big-money striker in the summer window – rather than before the 1 February transfer deadline.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (12 January) that Chelsea are also looking at Brighton striker Evan Ferguson, Napoli star Victor Osimhen, Bayer Leverkusen’s Victor Boniface and Brentford’s Ivan Toney.

Gyokeres, who joined Sporting just last summer, has hit 22 goals in 25 games this season – and has also added 10 assists.

The forward is under contract in Portugal until June 2028.

Chelsea

Chelsea sit ninth in the Premier League despite their big-money spending in recent seasons.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side are next in action in the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Middlesbrough on Tuesday (23 January) with Boro 1-0 up on aggregate.
