Irish Premiership: Cliftonville score late winner against Carrick Rangers as Larne beat Newry City

Casey scored a header in injury-time to help Cliftonville beat Carrick

Cliftonville and Larne closed the gap on Irish Premiership leaders Linfield as they both recorded victories on Friday evening.

Larne beat Newry City 3-0 at Inver Park to move to within a point of the table-topping Blues.

Chris Gallagher scored a stunning opener with Tomas Cosgrove and Andy Ryan also finding the net.

An injury-time winner from Odhran Casey helped Cliftonville to edge past Carrick Rangers 1-0 at Taylors Avenue.

Jim Magilton’s side remain third in the table, but are now just five points behind Linfield, who play on Saturday.

Late late show for the Reds

It was a game of few chances at Taylors Avenue, with the away side having the first opportunity of the match when Ross Glendinning’s outstretched leg denied Rory Hale’s goal bound effort.

Their best chance to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes came just before the break when Ronan Doherty’s in-swinging corner was headed down into the path of Luke Turner, whose strike was blocked by Reece Glendinning before the alert defender cleared the danger.

Chris Curran did nod the clearance back into the box, but no one in a green shirt could convert the danger.

On 62 minutes Curran created another goal scoring chance, when his pass from the right channel found Ronan Hale with Albert Watson throwing himself at the ball to make a superb block and stop the strong effort.

Shea Kearney connected with the rebound, but his effort struck the post to the frustration of the travelling fans.

Carrick continued to be resilient and nearly grabbed a goal of their own when Danny Gibson’s strike, originally saved by David Odumosu was spilled by the stopper. However, no one in a busy Cliftonville box could latch onto the ball.

The drama wasn’t over though as in the final minute of additional time, the away side scored the only goal of the game.

A free-kick had been awarded 25-yards out after Kyle Cherry was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Sean Stewart’s looping delivery was nodded home at the back post by Casey and past the outstretched Glendinning to seal another late away win for Cliftonville.
