Godzilla Minus One Makes Insane BO Record

Godzilla Minus One has achieved a remarkable feat, overtaking Bong Joon-ho’s Best Picture Oscar winner “Parasite” to become one of the top three most-grossing non-English films in US box office history. The record was set by a special black-and-white recut dubbed “Godzilla Minus One/Minus Colour,” which added $2.6 million to the film’s American total, bringing it to $55 million.

With an extra $2.2 million, “Godzilla Minus One” would surpass Roberto Benigni’s 1997 feature “Life Is Beautiful” to capture the No. 2 place on the all-time U.S. non-English charts, behind only “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.”

“Godzilla Minus One” is a film that blends an emotional story with the terrifying destruction of the huge monster Godzilla. Set in the aftermath of WWII, the film depicts Koichi Shikishima, an explosive pilot who flees a fight and seeks safety on an island base. Godzilla kills nearly everybody on the base, making Koichi feel guilty. Over the years, Koichi has worked as a minesweeper and cared for a lady and an abandoned baby.

However, Godzilla returns stronger than ever, putting Japan’s progress at risk. With a worldwide total of $102 million, “Godzilla Minus One” is the highest-grossing Toho “Godzilla” film in the 70-year Japanese franchise’s history. The film’s portrayal of Godzilla on a tight budget has won acclaim from Hollywood since it received an Academy Award nomination.
